K-PACS
Context
K-PACS is a lightweight DICOM viewer that became a common choice for small clinics and teaching labs. Unlike enterprise PACS platforms, it doesn’t try to cover every aspect of archiving and routing. Its value is in simplicity: install it on a workstation, open CT or panoramic images, and provide staff or students with an easy way to review studies. In dentistry, K-PACS is often used as a bridge—either as a local viewer next to a heavier system or as a teaching tool when there is no budget for a full VNA.
Technical Snapshot (table)
| Area | How K-PACS is usually used |
| Platform | Windows desktop application |
| Standards | Supports DICOM 3.0; import/export to local archive |
| Main role | Viewing, simple annotations, managing small sets of studies |
| Storage | Local archive folders; DICOM send/receive supported |
| Integration | Connects to PACS or modalities by IP/port settings |
| Security | Very basic; designed for LAN use, not enterprise compliance |
| Licensing | Distributed as freeware (legacy) |
| Scale | Fits single practices, student labs, or small diagnostic units |
Scenarios
Teaching lab. Students work with anonymized radiographs in K-PACS, practicing diagnostics without touching hospital infrastructure.
Private office. A dentist reviews CBCT scans received from an imaging center directly on a workstation.
Hybrid setup. IT staff configure K-PACS as a quick local viewer, while the long-term archive sits in Orthanc or another PACS.
Workflow (admin view)
Install the application on a Windows PC.
Create local archive folders and point K-PACS to them.
Add PACS or modality connections with DICOM AE titles, IP, and port.
Test image transfer (send/receive) between systems.
Back up the local archive directory regularly.
Train staff or students on importing, navigating, and exporting cases.
Strengths / Weak Points
Strengths
Very simple to deploy and run, even on older machines.
Handles DICOM reliably; easy to exchange studies.
Good teaching tool for dental faculties.
Works well as a fallback viewer alongside bigger systems.
Weak Points
Software is no longer actively updated.
Minimal logging and security controls.
Not suited for large archives or multi-site access.
Functionality limited compared to modern PACS/VNA platforms.
Why It Matters
Dentists and educators often need a straightforward way to open and review imaging studies without the complexity of enterprise PACS. K-PACS gives exactly that: a free, lightweight option that still speaks DICOM. Even though it is legacy software, in training setups and small clinics it continues to be useful—especially when paired with more modern back-end storage like Orthanc or OpenREM.
