Many practices still take their X-rays in Gendex VixWin Platinum, and many now hear the same thing from their dealer: VixWin is a DEXIS product today, and DEXIS’s current software line is DEXIS Imaging Suite and DTX Studio Clinic. This guide explains what changed, how the two programs differ in daily use, and what a VixWin office should plan for. It is based on DEXIS product pages, the DTX Studio installation documentation and our own program pages, checked on 29 October 2026. Status: Not tested yet — we have read the documentation, we have not run either program in a clinic.
The short answer: if VixWin still works on your Windows version and your sensors are supported, nothing forces you to move today. But DEXIS no longer lists VixWin among its software products, the last version we can confirm dates from 2022, and the published requirements stop at Windows 7. Plan the move rather than extend a VixWin installation: for a 2D practice with intraoral sensors, DEXIS Imaging Suite is the direct successor from the same company; for a practice that also runs CBCT, DEXIS points to DTX Studio Clinic. Both are commercial, as is VixWin Platinum itself.
What changed
- Ownership. VixWin was developed under the Gendex brand, which belonged to KaVo Kerr. According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs technology register, the VixWin technology was sold to DEXIS (Envista) in 2022.
- Product line. The DEXIS software overview lists DTX Studio Clinic, DEXIS Imaging Suite, Tx Studio, IS ScanFlow, IS Model and IS Ortho. VixWin is not on it. The US VixWin page returns a 404 error; the Australian page still describes the product.
- Versions. The last VixWin Platinum build we can confirm is 3.6.5 (listed as 3.6.5-11, dated 3 May 2022, in the VA Technical Reference Model). DEXIS publishes no release notes for either program; the current Imaging Suite generation is known simply as DEXIS 10.
- Windows support. The published VixWin requirements list Windows XP, Vista and 7; DEXIS does not publicly state Windows 10 or 11 support. For the Imaging Suite, DEXIS publishes a system requirements document per release, available through DEXIS or your dealer.
- Support. Independent dental IT firms report that DEXIS is winding down VixWin support. We found no official DEXIS end-of-life notice, so treat the date as unconfirmed and ask DEXIS directly.

Capturing a full-mouth series
In daily use the two programs behave alike: expose, and the software does the filing. The VixWin page says the program “automatically saves, orients, and properly mounts the image”, then auto-advances to the next position; the Quick Mount Selector holds the mounts you use most. The DEXIS page describes a 1-Click Full-Mouth Series and says the most common procedures take two clicks or fewer: when the sensor detects radiation, the image is saved, dated, tooth-numbered, oriented and mounted.
The difference is in the hardware list. VixWin was written for Gendex devices; the GXS-700 sensor manual, for example, asks for VixWin Platinum 2.0 or later with the GxPicture driver, and also lists DEXIS 9.0.2 or later. The DEXIS page promises “high image quality regardless of the sensor you currently use” through DEXtwain, but names no third-party sensors. Before buying the Imaging Suite for a Gendex sensor fleet, get the current supported-hardware list from DEXIS; the public documents we found are old.
Enhancing and reading images
VixWin Platinum comes with a sizeable processing toolbox, still listed on the product page: the Optimizer, Spine Compensation for panoramic images, Spotlight for raising contrast in a user-defined area, region-of-interest tools, customisable modality filters, unsharp-mask sharpening, edge enhancement, iso-density and colourisation.
DEXIS describes its processing as ClearVu, which optimises the signal path from acquisition to display, and does not list a comparable menu of filters. What it adds instead is DEXassist: one click marks up to six finding types on 2D intraoral images, among them caries, calculus, bone loss and periapical radiolucency. DEXIS states that the AI runs through an integration with DTX Studio Clinic, so DEXassist is an add-on with its own licence and an up-to-date DEXIS 10 installation behind it. You confirm or reject each finding yourself.
Linking to the practice management system
Both programs sit behind a bridge button in the practice management software. VixWin uses the VxLink module, which DEXIS says “integrates VixWin Platinum with all the major practice management programs”; VixWin can also run standalone. DEXIS Imaging Suite does the same job through DEXintegrator, and the DEXIS page notes that DTX Studio Clinic is the preferred route for multi-site practices or practices using PACS systems.
Neither DEXIS page names the supported practice management programs. Our bridge matrix lists which PMS vendors document a DEXIS or VixWin link, and our Open Dental DEXIS bridge guide walks through one of them. Whatever you choose, the patient number in the imaging program and in the PMS must match, and a software change is the moment this breaks if nobody plans it.
Photos, 3D and the DTX Studio question
VixWin is an X-ray program. DEXIS Imaging Suite adds DEXcapture for camera images and video, DEXwrite for referral letters, and DEXview 3D for volumes from i-CAT FLX V-series and DEXIS OP 3D units. It remains a 2D-centred suite, though: for CBCT diagnosis and planning DEXIS points to DTX Studio Clinic, described as one platform for all 2D and 3D imaging, with AI findings, implant planning and cloud case sharing.
This matters for the migration path. The DTX Studio installation guide names VixWin explicitly: to migrate an existing database “like Cliniview, VixWin, Digora for Windows” to a new DTX Studio Core database, you use the DTX Studio Core Migration Control Center, with DTX Studio Technical Support available for assistance. We did not find an equivalent public document for moving a VixWin database into DEXIS Imaging Suite, so ask DEXIS or your dealer how that conversion is done; we do not quote prices. On the Australian VixWin page DEXIS also lists VixWin among the systems DTX Studio integrates with, next to CLINIVIEW, Eaglesoft Advanced Imaging, Dentrix Ascend and Curve Dental, which suggests a transition period with old images staying in VixWin.
Device-agnostic alternatives
If the reason to leave VixWin is a mixed sensor fleet rather than loyalty to DEXIS, look at device-agnostic systems. Apteryx XrayVision from Planet DDS captures from Gendex/DEXIS, Carestream, Planmeca, Schick, Sirona and Vatech devices; note that the classic XrayVision 4 is discontinued and XVWeb is its cloud successor. Practices on other vendors’ hardware normally run that vendor’s suite, Sidexis 4 for Dentsply Sirona or CS Imaging for Carestream. To merely view images exported by a VixWin office, a general viewer such as Sante DICOM Viewer is enough; more options are in our hub of dental DICOM viewers and PACS tools.
Which one should you use
- VixWin works, sensors are supported, PCs are not due for replacement: keep it for now, but stop expanding the installation. Keep a verified backup of the VixWin image folders and note the Windows version on every workstation.
- PCs are moving to Windows 11 or sensors are being replaced: this is the trigger. Test on one workstation and get a written answer from DEXIS before you upgrade the practice.
- 2D practice with intraoral sensors and photos: DEXIS Imaging Suite is the like-for-like successor, with the same company behind sensor drivers and software.
- Practice with CBCT, several sites or a PACS: DTX Studio Clinic is the product DEXIS itself recommends, and it has a documented route for importing a VixWin database.
- Mixed hardware from several brands: compare a device-agnostic system such as Apteryx before committing to a vendor suite.
In every case, plan the database conversion with your IT provider and keep the old server readable until the new system has been in use for a full recall cycle.
FAQ
Is VixWin still supported?
DEXIS owns VixWin and still describes VixWin Platinum on its Australian site, but the product is missing from the current DEXIS software overview and the US product page is gone. Ask DEXIS support for a written statement for your version.
What is the latest version of VixWin Platinum?
The latest build we can confirm is 3.6.5, dated May 2022 in the US VA Technical Reference Model. DEXIS publishes no version history.
Does VixWin run on Windows 11?
DEXIS has not published a Windows 10 or 11 statement for VixWin; the published requirements end at Windows 7. Test before you upgrade, and confirm with DEXIS.
Can I open VixWin images in DEXIS Imaging Suite?
Not by simply installing the suite: the two programs keep separate databases. DEXIS and dealers handle conversions; for DTX Studio the documented tool is the DTX Studio Core Migration Control Center. Ask which route applies to your database before you buy.
Where do I download DEXIS Imaging Suite?
DEXIS distributes installers to licensed practices through its download centre and dealers, and keeps manuals on its e-labelling portal. There is no public installer; the product page offers a quote and a demo instead.
Where is the VixWin Platinum user manual?
The DEXIS download centre lists a VixWin Platinum document for registered users, and dealers can supply the manual.
